Adapted Properties

Adapted Properties

Adapted properties are advertised and priority is given to people who need adaptations (OT category). These properties will include at least one of the following features:

  • Level access or low entry shower
  • Stairlift
  • Vertical lift
  • Kitchen adapted for use from a wheelchair

Some adapted properties may be advertised exclusively for people who need adaptations (OT category).

If you require an adapted property you need to be on the Dudley Housing Register and should complete an application form, a medical assessment form and a disabled persons housing register application form. Click here Dudley Housing Register  to access the forms.

The disabled persons housing register application form will be assessed by a member of the Housing Occupational Therapy Team and we may visit to assess your needs or ask you to attend the Disabled Living Centre.

You will be advised when your application has been accepted and what type of properties you are eligible to bid for. Advertisements for adapted properties will include general information about the property, the adaptations present and be classified into one of the following general categories:

  • Full wheelchair access - allows for or could allow for access into and around the property in a wheelchair, including access to a lounge, bedroom, level access shower room, toilet and kitchen.
  • Part wheelchair access - allows for or could allow for access into and around the property as above except for the kitchen.
  • Mobility access - allows for or could allow for a ramp to the front or back door. Indoors allows for independent or assisted mobility on the level (e.g. with stick or frame, but not a wheelchair).

You may bid for properties in any access category although adapted properties will be offered first to the applicant whose needs best match the property size, adaptations and accessibility. For example if we have a property which is adapted for full wheelchair access we would offer this first to an applicant who uses a wheelchair full time and requires access to the kitchen. Whilst the access categories may help you to decide if you wish to bid, full suitability of the property will be dependent on your specific needs and Occupational Therapy advice will be given as required.

Adapted properties which have been advertised exclusively for OT category applicants and have not attracted any suitable bids may be re-advertised so that other people on the housing register can apply.

Accessible Properties

For the purposes of choice based lettings an accessible property is one which has no more than three steps to access and can be reasonably adapted with a ramp. These will be advertised as 'accessible'. Priority will not usually be given to persons needing adaptations.

If you require an adapted property you will be advised if you are eligible to bid for accessible properties. If you have the highest bid the Housing Occupational Therapy Team will arrange an assessment of the property and if it can be reasonably adapted to meet your needs, an offer will be considered.
